I used Lucas' The Art of Public Speaking (11th Edition with Connect) for my Speech Advice grade at Baruch College. While I wound upwardly being very impressed with the textbook, I felt that it had a number of meaning shortcomings and wound up preferring Engleberg and Daly's Presentations in Everyday Life, which I used in a Public Speaking grade at Wagner College.Showtime, the strengths. Lucas's volume is the most recognizable textbook in the field for some good reasons. Lucas provides a very clear guide to public speaking, giving physical examples of how to approach unlike types of speeches and how to arts and crafts and prepare for them. The text is conspicuously stated, updated to refer to electric current events and issues, and beautifully illustrated. For those reasons, I think the book is valuable.
But the biggest negative element is its toll signal. Retailing at over $100, the book is simply non affordable for many students at public universities, and asking them to buy it is not ethical, especially when there are and so many competing options which are all cheaper--some at half the price or less. The "Connect" multimedia CD is useful only probably office of the high cost indicate, and ultimately I don't recall the CD is necessary at all for students to learn effectively from the book. A further negative element, in my heed, is that Lucas's text is singlemindedly focused on public speaking classes. I think information technology would exist valuable to broaden the gaze of this book to discuss how the skills taught in the volume tin be practical to many other situations outside of the classroom and in daily life.

I recommend this book to whoever wants to learn public speaking. Information technology talks about the nearly fundamental aspects of public speaking, including ethics, purpose, organisation, vocal variety, body language, audience analysis, and etc.It does not talk well-nigh "dry theory" material. Each definition is followed by several bright examples. Information technology likewise has very thought provoking exercises after each chapter. Moreover, it provides several sample speeches in the multimedia that comes with the book. Last but not least, readers can go to the website for the book and go through more exercises there.
I find the principles in the book very simple but effective!
